The top 10 charitable causes supported by grant makers

There are so many areas in need of support, but which ones are catching the eyes of the biggest grant makers?

The causes supported by the top ten biggest grantmakers by total amount donated in 2011/12*

 

1. Health and medical £575.7m (58.3%)

2. Education, training and research £224.2m (22.7%)

3. Philanthropic intermediation £61.3m (6.21%)

4. Culture, sport and recreation £55.8m (5.65%)

5. Housing and community affairs £28m (2.83%)

6. Social services and relief £19.5m (1.97%)

7. Religion £7.42m (0.75%)

8. Conservation and protection £6.78m (0.68%)

9. International activities £5.46m (0.55%)

10. Civil rights, citizenship, and law and order £3.17m (0.32%)

The most popular cause by grants received among the top ten out-and-out grantmakers in 2011/12 was health and medical, which received £576m, constituting 58.3 per cent of the overall spending. This included the enormous contribution of the Wellcome Trust, the largest funder in our survey, which focuses its funding on health and medical advancements.
