Brits have £4.6bn worth of unworn clothing in their wardrobes

What have you got lurking in your wardrobe? More than £4.6 billion worth of unworn clothing is hidden away in wardrobes, dressers and chest of drawers across the UK, that’s an average of £93 per person.

In an effort to have a big clean out, tidy up and in aim of a good cause, Oxfam have teamed up with CollectPlus to put unworn clothing to good use.

Fee Gilfeather, Oxfam Trading’s Head of Marketing said “By having a clear out of your unworn clothing, you could be helping to provide clean water for a school, or vital supplies to a family in an emergency. We will sort your donations and sell them in our shops or on Oxfam’s Online Shop, so you can be sure that every last item donated is used to raise money to help fight poverty worldwide.”

With disposable wardrobes gaining in popularity it’s estimated that the average Brit will have 7 mint-condition items hidden away which adds up to a staggering 350 million separate pieces.

The top 5 list includes:

  1. 53% of T-Shirts/Tops
  2. 30% of Trousers
  3. 29% Sweaters
  4. 26% Jeans
  5. 24% Coats
