Windsor Horse Rangers aim is to educate local children about all aspects of horsecare and riding. We have 25 horses and ponies at our farm and are run by volunteers. For 51 weekends of the year 180 children aged between 8 and 18 take part for 4-7 hours each, including some children with special needs such as autism and ADHD.
Our horses are mainly in their mid to late twenties. They come to us when they have ‘been there and done that’ and are looking for a quieter life. They spend the week grazing in our fields and are used for a few half hour riding lessons each weekend which gives them a job to do and keeps them ticking over. Some of our older ponies have been with us for decades and are now semi retired with a home with us for life.
The children are taught from a comprehensive syllabus which gets more in depth as they progress through Rangers. They learn how to get the horses ready to ride, how to clean up after them and every aspect of how to look after a horse. They work towards achievement badges and are given ranks and promotions to give them more responsibility as they prove themselves.
In addition to learning about riding and horse care, rangers learn teamwork, leadership, respect for people and animals, self-esteem, responsibility, self belief and many other important life skills. They also spend a lot of time outside doing physical activities such as poo-picking the fields, mucking out stables and sweeping the yard.
Over the years hundreds of local children have been members of Windsor Horse Rangers and many have gone on to further education and careers with horses, gaining a direction in life which they did not have before joining us.
100% of our income through member donations goes towards looking after the horses so anything else we need has to be paid for by fundraising.
