Throughout the world 2 out of 3 people lack access to safe, affordable surgery when it is needed.

In response to this need, Mercy Ships brings the world’s largest charity hospital-ship, Africa Mercy direct to patients, desperately in need of help.

Volunteer surgeons, medical teams and other professionals give their expertise, time and skills to provide surgeries free-of-charge for the long suffering, hidden and outcast.  Patients with life threatening or life destroying conditions - such as  disfiguring tumour, cleft palate, incontinence caused by childbirth injury, blindness, bowed legs or club foot, burns contractures,  dental disease -  are restored to health and wellbeing.  They are given a future, and can return home to work, school and community to lead fulfilled lives.

In 40 years, Mercy Ships has operated 4 ships and served in 55 developing nations, giving over 89,000 free surgeries, treated more than 163,000 dental patients providing over 423,000 procedures; trained more than 6,150 local health workers and surgeons; taught more than 223,000 people basic healthcare.

Today, Mercy Ships works with the host nation’s Health Departments and local hospitals to help build medical capacity in their own health service, training surgeons and medical teams, who train others to improve safety and standards.  Mercy Ships undertakes projects to extend and renovate hospital wards and clinics.

When the ship sails on from a ten month port service, it leaves behind thousands of lives transformed, as well as a lasting legacy of improved healthcare.

Mercy Ships is a Christian organisation, serving those of every faith and of all ages.
