Out of every five people in the UK, one will suffer from physical disability or impaired vision. The majority of these are not born with the disability instead, at some point in their lives they have to face the diagnosis of an incurable condition that will impact on every second of their life from that time forward.
However, the right facilities and support mean that a disability does not have to dictate how you live your life. And it most certainly does not have to mean a loss of vital independence and self-worth.
Jewish Blind & Disabled is the only Jewish charity dedicated to ensuring that neither physical disability nor impaired vision is allowed to become a barrier to maintaining one’s independence and dignity. We alone in the Jewish community provide developments of mobility apartments specially designed to enable people from the age of 18 to 100 to do the everyday tasks that are key to living independently, tasks which otherwise would be insurmountable for those whose mobility, dexterity or sight has been damaged. We also provide essential round the clock support from our own resident house managers, 365 days a year. This allows both tenants and their families to enjoy their independence safe in the knowledge that there is always a friendly face on hand in case of an emergency.
In addition, for those we are unable to house, we provide a free-to-use online resource called the Guide to Empowering Ability. Available on our website, this guide provides tailor-made reports describing the products and ideas that can help someone maintain their vital independence wherever they may live.
As an independent charity that does not receive any government funding we are extremely grateful to all those who support our work.
