The Social Mobility Foundation (SMF) is a charity which aims to make a practical improvement in social mobility for young people from disadvantaged backgrounds. With the help of employers, we support hundreds of young people every year, who have the ability to flourish in the top universities and professions but who lack the encouragement and networks to help them get there.

Our students

To qualify for our programmes, sixth form students must be predicted a minimum of ABB at A-Level and have achieved a minimum of 4 A grades at GCSE. They must be eligible for Free School Meals or have attended a state school where a high percentage of students are eligible for Free School Meals and be the first generation in their family to attend university.

Our support

SMF students join our programmes in Year 12 and are provided with support right through to graduation. They apply to one of 11 professional sectors, including Banking & Finance, Engineering & Physics, Law and Medicine. In 2016, over 1200 students joined an SMF programme.

Every student on an SMF programme has the opportunity to access four main areas of support:

  • A mentor from their chosen profession

  • Practical insight into professional careers, including work placements

  • University application advice

  • Professional Skills development sessions

Our reach

By the end of 2018, we want young people, wherever they live in the UK, to be able to access what we do. We now have offices in Birmingham, Glasgow, London, Manchester and Newcastle and by the end of 2017 will have opened an office in Liverpool.

Our impact

In 2015, the Institute for Fiscal studies published their first set of results of an independent evaluation of our work on higher education outcomes, funded by J.P. Morgan. It found:

  • We increased the probability of attending a Russell Group university by up to 27%

  • We increased the probability of attending a university most visited by employers by up to 43%

  • The scale of our impact on elite university entry is akin to a candidate having A*A*A* at A-Level rather than AAA.
