The Prisoners of Conscience Appeal Fund was established by Amnesty International in 1962 as a separate charity dedicated to relieving the hardship of prisoners of conscience; people who have been persecuted (often detained, beaten, tortured and raped) for the non-violent expression of their conscientious beliefs, be it opposing a repressive government, practising a banned religion or campaigning for democracy and human rights.

Through our network of trusted referral agencies, we receive applications for assistance with immediate and urgent needs, such as food, clothing and medication, to things essential for a decent quality of life such as transport costs, study materials, counselling, family reunion and rehabilitation after torture.  We also have a separate ‘Bursaries Fund’, dedicated to helping prisoners of conscience in exile to convert their existing qualifications, allowing them to resume interrupted careers and to rebuild shattered lives.

We offer practical support in the form of financial grants that cover three main areas; relief, rehabilitation and resettlement.  Our beneficiaries may be languishing in a filthy jail cell, suffering harsh treatment and torture and in need of food or medicine, or they may have had to flee their homes, leaving behind family and friends, and have arrived in a new country, traumatised and destitute.  All our grants help some of the world’s bravest people, those determined to hold fast to their beliefs in truly difficult and frightening circumstances.
