Pratham aims to provide basic literacy and numeracy to India’s 100 million illiterate children and raise the standards of primary education across the country. Pratham is India’s largest non-profit organizations working in the primary education sector. There are still over 500million people living in poverty in India, and while school enrolment figures are high at approximately 95%, Pratham has found that many children in India are not reaching their age specific learning levels and cannot read, write or do basic arithmetic. Using very low-cost and scalable methods we operate programmes in rural and urban communities, working with local volunteers, school teachers and local governments to ensure that hundreds of thousands of children get the quality education they deserve every year. So far, through our flagship programme Read India Pratham has helped over 34 million children reach their age appropriate learning level. The total cost of implementation of Read India is only £10 per child per year. This small amount can help a child finish school with a bright future. Pratham UK focuses on fundraising to support Pratham’s work in India, while also maintaining the public awareness of the charities’ work and the educational circumstances in India.
