Pathfiner Guide Dog Programme, known as Pathfinder Dogs, was founded by Anne Royle in 2003, who is herself blind and now also a qualified Pathfinder Dog Handler. Our Pathfinder Guide Dog Programme exists to provide a much needed choice for blind people in the UK who need a German Shepherd dog as a guide.
We specialise in German Shepherd dogs, who are not only very intelligent ‘one person’ dogs but whose eagerness to work and to please their handlers cannot be matched by any other breed.
The demand for German Shepherd guides is not currently being met in the UK. We have an ever growing waiting list of blind people who wish to become Pathfinder Dog Handlers.
One of the objectives of Pathfinder Dogs is to meet the demand and complement the existing UK guide dog provision. This will provide people with a choice of breed type, training methods and organisational philosophy.
Pathfinder Dogs is an independent charity that relies solely upon our own fund raising efforts and voluntary contributions – we receive no ‘statutory’ funding from Government or other sources.
The operational costs of qualifying one Pathfinder Dog team (dog and handler from the initial puppy training, through to qualification with the blind person) is around £36k. Pathfinder Dogs continue to support the dog from the cradle to the grave as well as supporting the Handler throughout those stages in their dog’s lifetime.
