DRWF was formed in 1998 by a father whose son and daughter had been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, ten years apart. This man, Mike Gretschel, along with DRWF co-founder John Alahouzos and their families and friends, spent over 25 years raising awareness and funds to support vital research until Mike sadly passed away in late 2024.
His type 1 son, Chris, then took the reins beside John and our other board members, and together with our small team of 14 in the UK, strive to help those living with diabetes stay well until a cure is found.
Supported by editorial and research advisory boards, DRWF’s aims are three-fold:
- To raise awareness of diabetes; the different types, causes, treatments and management.
- To provide reliable, medically evidenced and PIF tick accredited information, and to support programmes that aid good self-management.
- To fund the research which will change thousands of lives, once a cure is found but also supporting the development of treatments and technologies which lighten the strain of living with diabetes.
We deliver our aims in a variety of ways, from in person events and wellness days, to operating our Diabetes Wellness Network and sharing our literature and resources, to being a listening ear at the end of the phone. We exist entirely as a result of voluntary donations, and without your support we could not carry on.
