Volunteer gardener and trustee at Martin House Jenny Wilkinson has been highly commended in the Yorkshire Evening Post Healthcare Awards.

Jenny received the commendation in the Volunteer of the Year category, at a ceremony held at Leeds United's Elland Road ground.

Her daughter Zoe was one of the first children to use Martin House, and died here just four months after we opened in 1987.

Jenny has continued to support Martin House ever since; becoming a trustee in 2000 and a volunteer gardener in 2008, and now leads a team of six volunteers who spend every Wednesday tending our extensive gardens. 

She attended the award ceremony, which was hosted by BBC Look North presenter Harry Gratian, on Friday with fellow garden volunteer Julie Plews.

Heather Griffiths, volunteer co-ordinator at Martin House, said: "Jenny has made such a huge contribution to Martin House over many years, and we're delighted her passion, commitment and dedication has been recognised in these awards."
