Group B Strep Support is at the forefront of preventing group B Strep infections in babies, by supporting families, educating health professionals, and promoting better methods for testing and prevention.
It’s shocking that, on average in the UK, one baby a week dies as a result of group B Strep infection. There is an urgent need to tackle this infection, which can kill or cause life-long disabilities.
Every week, parents are blindsided by their baby’s group B Strep infection, and are fighting to rebuild their lives. One of these parents is Charlotte. Charlotte’s daughter, Aimee, appeared perfectly healthy when she was born. The next day she was distressed, though allowed home with her parents, Charlotte and Stewart. Sadly, Aimee’s health deteriorated: she struggled to feed and was jaundiced. By day four, she went limp in her mum’s arms.
Aimee was rushed to hospital and diagnosed with group B Strep meningitis. She spent three weeks in intensive care before going home. Group B Strep infection has left Aimee with quadriplegic spastic dysarthria cerebral palsy. She can't walk, talk, eat or drink properly. Aimee has to have specialised equipment to help her sit, stand, bathe and sleep, as well as having a special pushchair moulded for her body. This equipment is simply to help her and her family cope with day-to-day life.
Charlotte says: "Had I been tested for group B Strep, I could’ve been offered antibiotics in labour and Aimee's illness and disabilities would’ve been prevented.”
Public awareness of group B Strep has increased greatly because of the charity’s work – it has saved lives. However, children like Aimee prove that not everyone is aware, and we need your help to change that.
It is vital that awareness continues to increase, but to do this, we urgently need to find the funds to ensure this essential work continues. The decision you make today could help save a baby’s life tomorrow.
If an expectant parent knows about group B Strep, they can take action to protect their baby. If they haven’t been told, they can’t.
By supporting our work today, you can help save lives. So please, give generously to help protect more babies from these devastating infections.
Thank you for anything you are able to give.
