Khayaal is an award-winning charitable British arts enterprise dedicated to the production of original dramatic interpretations of classic Muslim world literature and the experience of Muslims in the modern world for the stage, radio and screen.
By bringing together artists of different faiths and cultures to produce entertainment and theatre-in-education programmes with popular appeal that celebrate the universal human dream of virtue, we aim to creatively and imaginatively demonstrate the reconciliation and accord that is so needed in today’s world.
Founded in 1997, Khayaal is the first professional theatre company of its kind offering mainstream audiences horizon-broadening experiences of Muslim world culture through contemporary drama. Inspired by the universal trend within classic Muslim literature and the challenge of producing what theatre luminaries like Peter Brook, Jerzy Grotowski and Antonin Artaud have described as the ‘theatre of the invisible made visible’ Khayaal has created its own genre and brand of entertainment whose formula of wisdom and humour has won it popular and critical acclaim nationally and internationally.
In its 15-year history, Khayaal has developed a strong reputation as the sole dedicated producer of professional theatre in the West inspired by Muslim world culture and heritage. Over this period, it has brought to the stage more than a dozen original theatre productions of various scales and durations and many more theatre-in-education programmes and workshops.
