About Us

The single biggest killer in Britain today is cardiovascular disease. It accounts for death and disablement by heart attack, stroke, pulmonary embolism and gangrene and currently kills more than two and a half times more people than die from all forms of cancer. The most common contributory factor in cardiovascular disease is thrombosis - the formation of a blood clot which then locks an artery or vein.

The Thrombosis Research Institute is the only one of its kind in Europe; tackling this problem by combining pure research and clinical activity and collaborating with research groups worldwide.

The Institute was opened in 1990 at which time a significant breakthrough had already been achieved in preventing post-operative thrombosis by pioneering the use of low dose heparin. This technique alone now saves around 200,000 lives a year.

We need to develop further preventative medicines and therapies and to identify those at risk so that they may be protected.

Our ultimate aim is to develop a vaccine so that one day thrombosis may be eliminated altogether.

To do this we need the support and generosity of your clients.
