Operating since 1943, St John and Red Cross Defence Medical Welfare Service is a registered charity that works for the Ministry of Defence and with other charitable partners. Their main activity is to provide practical and emotional support to military personnel, their families and other entitled civilians when they are in hospital, rehabilitation or recovery centres.  The name was changed to DMWS in 2001 when they became an independent charity and they are currently the only military charity and civilian welfare organisation to deploy to areas of conflict with the Armed Forces to support the troops on the frontline.
From frontline to recovery they are offering a service personnel (both regular and reservists), their families, veterans and some entitled civilians with a confidential 24/7 welfare service.
The headquarters of the organisation are based in Andover. DMWS is operating across the UK in six hospitals in: in Northallerton near Catterick Garrison, Peterborough, Portsmouth, Plymouth near the Defence Recovery Centre Hasler Company, Frimley Park, near Aldershot Garrison and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham. They are currently supporting over 13,500 patients and their families every year and are the only civilian welfare organisation and military charity that deploys to areas of conflict with our Armed Forces.
