The Devon Horse and Pony Sanctuary was established by Sylvia Phillips in 1976 when she rescued an abused old Racehorse named Ventura from a local riding stables along with his pony friend Honey, this started the lifelong devotion to rescuing equines and giving them a safe home. For Sylvia it was often a hard life where she sometimes went without so that the animals in her care had everything they needed. Sylvia would often have up to 50 equines living at the Sanctuary at one time and she would know and speak to all of them on a daily basis.

Her legacy lives on through her family who have also devoted their lives to providing a Sanctuary on Dartmoor for all kinds of equines. They work towards to rehabilitating Police and Racehorses as well as a last chance home for those equines that have nowhere else to go. Each animal in their care has a personality of their own and they share that joy with a community of people that live with Autism and Dementia as the connection with equine and human is so rewarding for both.
