Surrey Association For Visual Impairment

Registered Charity Number: 1121949
Leatherhead, Surrey

Sight for Surrey is a county-wide charity dedicated to providing support services and activities for adults, young people and children, who have a vision impairment or who have a combined sight/hearing loss. It delivers contracts on behalf of Surrey County Council and its charitable arm delivers a range of projects that support and enhance these contracts and services. Each year the charity has a target of £250,000 to raise, to support these charitable activities.

Sight for Surrey offers a holistic, person-centred approach, focused on meeting the needs of each adult/young person/child and providing support for their families. A comprehensive range of services contributes to effective enablement and to the wellbeing and social integration of vision impaired people.

Alongside the assessment, rehabilitation and life-skills training, we provide specially trained Communicator Guides for those with a sight and hearing loss; Vision Impairment Support Workers for everyday help and Friendship Groups that operate once a month. Our service users are able to benefit from our team of Outreach Workers across the county.

The charitable programmes have developed as a result of continued feedback from service users.  These are in the areas of Volunteering Support, ICT and Communications Classes, Eye Clinic Liaison Officer, Low Vision Aids and Gadgets, Assessments and Training for Computers; Transcription Service; Employment Programme to help those with a vision impairment back into work, ICT Loan Scheme, Hearing and Sight Mobile Service (with partner First Point – equivalent charity for those with a hearing loss). The Children’s Inclusion Programme offers activities designed to integrate vision impaired children into everyday activities that their sighted peers take for granted.

Sight for Surrey has been operating as a charity since 1922 – it was set up as a result of WW1 to support returning servicemen. The charity now supports more than 4,000 people. The numbers of clients and demands on the services we provide are growing as people live longer and develop age-related vision and hearing issues. We support people who have been born with these issues and those who develop them in later life.
