Fundraiser editor Jenny Ramage chats about doing what she loves, being a survivor, and why she avoids wind turbines
Why and how did you get into the fundraising sector?
A few years ago, I decided I wanted to get more involved in my local community. I started volunteering in my spare time as an ambassador for a small charity called CleanUpUK, whose mission it was to rid the five Olympic boroughs of litter problems. I was working as a legal editor at the time, but the charity stuff I did made me realise I’d much rather be producing articles about the great work charities do. I started editing The Fundraiser shortly afterwards.
What do you love most about your job?
I’ve always loved working with words, so being an editor suits me down to the ground. I’m also passionate about charities, so it makes for a perfect combination. I've found fundraisers to be a particularly friendly and open bunch, and a great pleasure to work with.
Give us an unusual fact that people might not know about you?
I have an inexplicable fear of wind turbines. I can barely look at them! I find them really sinister.
What would be your superpower?
I’d love to be able to teleport myself anywhere. There are so many places in the world I’d like to visit, and I don’t think I’d ever be able to fit them all in otherwise.
What has been your proudest achievement?
Surviving cancer - and taking some important lessons from it, which I’ve used to create a great life for myself where I get to spend my time doing all the things I love.
If you weren't in this job, what would you like to do instead?
I’m also a music producer, so if I wasn’t an editor I could see myself getting more into that. I’d probably keep volunteering though. I sometimes work at a volunteer-run cinema and arts centre, doing bar work or ushering. It’s an inspiring place to be and great fun to be a part of.
What's the best piece of advice you've ever been given?
If you enjoy doing something, you should do it as often as possible, regardless of whether or not it will bring you money or praise.
What three things would you take with you to a desert island?
My home studio, including my laptop, speakers and a midi keyboard. Then I’d just while away the time composing silly songs about coconuts, crabs and sandcastles.
What makes you happy?
Apart from dying my hair silly colours...? Doing the blog, making music, having adventures and knowing there’s no end to what can be learned and discovered.
