Inspiring people and communities through leadership qualifications in sport.
Sports Leaders UK is changing lives. Originally founded 30 years ago, Sports Leaders UK was set up to support people across the UK who would like to give back to their local community. It now assists over 150,000 young people a year to give them the skills, advice and confidence to provide sporting opportunities to their neighbourhood.
Sports Leaders UK delivers sports leadership awards and qualifications through schools, colleges, local authorities, prisons, young offender units and community-based organisations. It provides awards and qualifications that help people to gain the skills and motivation to create and run sporting events; it provides opportunities for young people to volunteer as a Sports Leader and take up a purposeful role within their community. In operation since 1982 it now has a network of 7,000 registered trainers and 3,500 accredited delivery centres. Sports Leaders UK trains in excess of 2,500 Tutors each year and each year 180,000 people gain Sports Leaders UK's awards and qualifications - more than a million have done so since 1982.
What We Do
Sports Leaders UK changes lives: its range of awards and qualifications equips people with the skills and motivation to create and run sporting activities in the community.
Each year 150,000 young people train to be Sports Leaders with Sports Leaders UK, mostly through schools, colleges and universities. Now, a growing number of courses are delivered in prisons, youth offending institutes, and youth and community organisations. This creates opportunities for young people to volunteer as a Sports Leader and take up a purposeful role within their community, gaining recognition for their skills as a leader, and with this develop a valuable sense of self-worth. Many build and pursue ambitions for further education, training, and future employment which they would not have otherwise dreamt of.
How We Do It
In addition to running accredited courses and creating volunteering opportunities, Sports Leaders UK has created Sports Leaders UK Foundation, to reach those we can't help through our traditional mainstream work. The Foundation will invest directly in community delivery of sports leadership, employing special project workers and sports leadership tutors to reach young people on the margins of our society.
We believe that sports leadership can make a real, positive difference for individual lives and society at large. That belief is supported by the thousands of local authorities, community organisations, police, prisons, education professionals and health authorities who deliver our awards and qualifications to help achieve their own objectives. But we need to work with even more of those organisations and make sure we are resourced and equipped to reach more of those with the most challenges in life.
Why We Do It
For many young people a leadership role in sport gives them recognition and a sense of self-worth that they would not otherwise find. By equipping people - particularly young people - with effective communication and organisation skills, and engendering responsibility and self-respect - Sports Leaders UK awards and qualifications encourage personal growth and, through a commitment to volunteering, establish and maintain activities that help people to play together and develop strong cohesive communities which thrive. Thriving sport and recreational programmes are at the heart of the most thriving villages, towns and cities.
The charity also runs EnergyClub, a fun, free physical activity club for kids aged 4-11, delivered by trained volunteers at Primary Schools across England.
Energy Club is funded by the Cabinet Office via the Social Action Fund which is operated by the Social Investment Business.
