CARISMA, the Community Alliance for Renewal, Inner-South Manchester Area (in and around Moss Side and Longsight) began in 2002 as a grass-roots response by local communities affected by gun and gang crime.
In a context of gang violence Carisma’s role was to network existing provision, organisations and projects, advocate on behalf of our community and its young people to media, Council, Government and funders, and mobilise local people to positive action to build peace, cohesion and life- chances for young people.
As a focus for the ongoing work, and to provide a platform for many to come together for an intense and visible period of activity, Carisma ran “PeaceWeek” every spring from 2003 to 2012. This included work in most local schools, creative events for and by young people, a famly Lantern Parade for peace and many other events and activities. Spin-offs included a Weapons Amnesty, the OSBAs (Outstanding Social Behaviour Awards) and community radio station PeaceFM.
By 2012, due to the efforts of the police and many local and other groups, organisations and activists, there was a sharp decline in gun and gang crime, though it was recognised that many of the issues behind it still needed to be dealt with. With this task in mind, and to ‘inspire communities’, Carisma has been developing work and projects to build social cohesion, challenge barriers to life-chances and address the unseen legacy of hurt and emotional damage left by the years of violence, now that the headlines (and a lot of the funding) have moved on.
All of Carisma’s work is carried out by unpaid volunteers from the local area. We are always on the lookout for more help and resources from those who want to invest in their own community and the future well-being of its people.
