Thank you for your interest in joining us as a Samaritan volunteer as we are always looking for more people aged 18 or over willing to help us. The way we work is to invite all prospective volunteers to attend one of our informal Information Evenings where we explain in detail what we do, how we select and train our volunteers, and you can also ask any questions you may have before committing yourself to apply to join us.

We feel it is important to make clear being a listening Samaritan does involve regular duties, some being in unsocial hours as we are a 24/7 service and we therefore hope you will be able to fit this into your lifestyle. For instance in Bristol we expect listening volunteers to do at least one night duty (02:00 to 07:00) every two months as well as other regular day time shifts of up to 4 hours each, the times of which are more flexible to suit individual circumstances although evening shifts are often over subscribed.

Information Evenings are held on the first Monday of each month in our Centre at 37 St Nicholas Street, Bristol, BS1 1TP. There is no need to book, just come along and they start at 7:15 pm and finish by 9:00 pm.

After attending an Information Evening and completing an application form you will be invited to attend a selection event which is held every three months. If you are selected this will be followed by initial training which involves attending training sessions in our Centre each week over a two month period. It could be several months for the next available training session to begin and therefore some time before you are able to answer our emergency phones to Callers. For these reasons volunteering as a Samaritan is suitable only for those who are able to consider it as a longer term volunteering opportunity.

We do hope you will be able to come along to our next Volunteer Information Evening.
