Adventure Under Sail
Registered Charity Number: 1124276
Adventure Under Sail is a small charity based in Weymouth in the south UK coast. Here we operate the tall ship Pelican - one of only 5 class A tall ships left in the UK.
Pelican is a sail training ship which means that we can take people with little or no previous sailing experience on day sails and voyages around Weymouth, the UK, Ireland, Europe and further afield. Individuals and groups are welcomed on board the ship as 'trainee' crew members and can get involved in all aspects of sailing the ship, from taking the helm to steer and climbing the rigging, to doing a night-watch and scrubbing the decks!
Skills gained during a sail training voyage far exceed sailing skills. They include the ability to work as a team member, to take the lead and delegate tasks, to communicate well and to adapt to a new environment with new people.
Individuals also report leaving the ship feeling more confident, more driven, and more self-disciplined.
We find that young people in particular benefit hugely from the acquisition of skills in this environment - skills which are transferable to all aspects of life and which ultimately make them more employable.
The charitable element of what we do is to provide bursaries for young people who would not otherwise be able to afford a voyage with us. We also work with them to help them to raise the remaining funds towards their trip, and then our permanent and volunteer crew work hard to ensure they receive a high standard of training on board and get the learning and personal outcomes that they need from their experience.
