The Youth Training Vessel s/y Next Wave is owned by Youth With A Mission (YWAM) registered charity 264078 and operated by Marine Reach Ministries, the maritime arm of YWAM and the daughter UK charity YWAM Next Wave (charity # 1148055).

More info can be found at www.ywam.org, www.marinereachministries.com and www.ywamnextwave.org.  Its port of registry is Liverpool and its area of operation is UK waters, Northern Europe and the Mediterranean.

1.      Activities and Purpose

The vessel is used as a training platform to develop young people in character, life skills and sail training with a biblical foundation.  The typical length of time for a course on board is four months, but can be shorter or longer depending on group or individualís needs.  The vessel often works in her home Port of Liverpool where she has a strong partnership with Merseyside Police, the Anglican Cathedral and other local churches.     While based in Liverpool it works closely with the local groups to reach out to disaffected youth in the area.

The vessel was constructed in Sweden in 1986 and operated until 2006 as a Sail Training Vessel in the Baltic by the Elida foundation, as s/y Elida IV.  It provided courses for Church confirmation classes and sail training trips.

YWAM purchased the vessel at the beginning of 2007 and has operated her successfully since from as far north as Norway, south as southern Turkey, west as Ireland and east as Ukraine (Black Sea).

During the various voyages the crew, trainee crew and guests practice sailing, navigation and seamanship. Through taking responsibilities onboard, coaching by crew and visiting teachers, their character is developed.  In the many ports visited partnerships are developed with local churches and youth organizations to reach out to disaffected youth, the homeless and others marginalized by society.  All this being part of the training the young people on board experience.

Why donate to this charity

A growing number of youth in Europe are in crisis right now losing a sense of identity and vision for the future.  Selfishness is not a new human dilemma, but teaching and coaching to live for others is in short supply.  This vessel and crew presents a beacon of hope to all they encounter that biblical values work and caring for your neighbour is a good philosophy.

All the crew and support staff that work for this charity are non-salaried volunteers, who raise their own sponsorship.  The crew make friends wherever they go, finding support in ports (even among harbour authorities) local volunteers and suppliers.  This enables us to operate this vessel at a fraction of the cost it should be, yet though the volunteerís dedication and professionalism, keeping the vessel in great conditions.  This is all very important to us as we endeavour to teach generosity, hospitality, hard work and faith through example as much as words.

The most recent sailing/discipleship school started in Cowes 2012 and ended in Liverpool 2013.  There were twelve trainees on board and the vessel visited Weymouth, Cardiff, Glasgow and Liverpool. Prior to this she did a Scandinavian tour.

The next DTS will start in September 2013 and sail to Greece and Turkey. Applications online at www.ywamnextwave.org
