The Social Mobility Foundation (SMF) is a charity which aims to make a practical improvement in social mobility for young people from low-income backgrounds. Our aim is the creation of a nationwide framework whereby all young people from low-income backgrounds have access to complementary supports which help them plan their professional future.
The SMF was founded in 2006 in order to provide opportunities and networks of support for 16-17 year olds who wouldn’t have been able to have them otherwise. At the beginning, we supported students in London hoping to be successful within the legal sector. Now, 6 years on, students initially supported by us have gone onto be successful in achieving degrees and graduate entry jobs and we have expanded our work to 11 different sectors (Accountancy, Architecture, Banking & Finance, Business, Engineering, Law, Media, Medicine, Politics, Science, Technology) and to other cities (Birmingham, Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool, London, Manchester and Nottingham). By working in more career sectors and in more cities, we can be sure our support is relevant to individuals on each programme.
