Health Improvement Project Zanzibar (HIPZ) is a UK-registered charity established in 2006 by Mr Ru MacDonagh, a Consultant Urological Surgeon, based in the UK. Ru had previously worked in East Africa and Zanzibar, and was approached by the Principal Secretary for Zanzibar’s Ministry of Health to help improve healthcare at a hospital in the south of the island. This led to a unique partnership with the Zanzibar Government to improve healthcare in Zanzibar, through fundraising and professional support in the UK.

The flagship project was to renovate, equip and run a 36-bed cottage hospital in southern Zanzibar, where many of the 60,000 or so locals had little or no access to healthcare. A 10-year agreement was established in 2007 giving HIPZ management responsibility for Makunduchi Hospital, with the aim of improving the hospital facilities and clinical services.
