FAILAND & PORTBURY CRICKET CLUB (est. 1894) is one of the oldest cricket clubs in Bristol & Somerset. Our ground at Horse Race Lane BS8 3TY is 5 miles south of Bristol, set in open countryside with views across the Bristol Channel to Wales. Our website is at .

Our players & supporters come from Somerset, Bristol, Gloucestershire, South Wales, Oxfordshire and even London to one of the finest cricket grounds in the South West. While our 1st & 2nd XIs play at a high standard in the Senior Division of the Bristol & District League, we are very much a community club with opportunities available at all levels for competitive & recreational sport to be played.

In early 2011 the chance suddenly arose for the Club to almost double the size of its ground by buying adjoining land at a cost of £50,000. But it had no funds to do so and the extra land was to be sold urgently elsewhere at auction.

Finance was however raised for a rescue company by a small group of well-wishers with short-term loans, assisted by a longer-term £10,000 Club loan from The Playing Fields Association, enabling the £50,000 price to be paid before the auction, and the extra acres to be bought and saved for the Club & the community.

The land was urgently worked on & fenced in bleak winter conditions, and from April 2011 it has been fully incorporated into the playing area, which now contains within it a centuries-old oak tree, with other even older oaks surrounding the boundary.

But the loans still have to be repaid, and the Club is urgently seeking funding support through this Charity Choice fundraising site.

The Club is fully registered as a charity with the Charity Commission under reg. no. 1140768 . Its charitable objectives are:

“The promotion of community participation in healthy recreation, in particular by the provision of facilities for the playing of cricket and other amateur sports deemed charitable under English law.”

The Club is also registered with HMRC for Gift Aid.  All donations are therefore “topped up” by the Government with a further 25% of the amount donated, and higher-rate taxpayers can also set off amounts gifted against their personal tax liability in each tax year.

Gift Aid works like this (using an £800 gift by any UK taxpayer as an example):

[more detail at e.g. Gift Aid (Charity Commission)]

HMRC treats the £800 as £1,000 including basic rate tax paid at 20%. So it tops up the £800 by 25% to make £1,000 actually received by our Charity.  So any UK taxpayer’s gift of £800 means £1,000 received by our Charity towards our £50,000 target.

And 40% taxpayers can claim though their tax return an extra 20% relief against their personal higher rate tax. HMRC treats their £800 gift as £1,000 (basic rate 20% tax paid).  The extra 20% relief x £800 gift = £200.  So £800 donated minus £200 tax relief = £600 net cost to a 40% taxpayer.

And for 50% taxpayers the relief on the notional £1,000 gift is 30%, making their £800 donated minus £300 tax relief = £500 net cost to a 50% taxpayer.

So £800 gifted through this site by any taxpayer means £1,000 received by our Charity. For a 20% taxpayer the cost is £800, but for a 40% taxpayer the cost is just £600, and for a 50% taxpayer only £500.

Companies do not participate in the Gift Aid scheme but their donations are set off against company income otherwise liable to corporation tax. So in tax year 2011/12 an £800 donation would cost a 20% corporation-tax-paying company just £640, and a main (26%) corporation tax-rate-paying company just £592.

The payment-processing fee paid by us to Charity Choice for use of this facility, and processing for & paying over to us the Gift Aid reclaim from HMRC, is just 1.67% x amount gifted = on £800 only £13.

Every donation made though this Charity Choice site by debit card or credit card is by secure payment and generates an instant form of receipt (with unique reference number) which higher-rate taxpayers can print off and use to support their 20% or 30% tax reclaim.

Help us to raise the £50,000 needed to pay off the loans that had to be taken out to secure for now & for future generations this community cricket ground.

If you’re a basic-rate taxpayer, your e.g. £800 gift = £1,000 towards our target.

If you’re a higher-rate taxpayer, you can also reduce your tax bill by 40% or 50% on the amount gifted [midnight 5th April is the tax year-end deadline].

If you’re a non-taxpayer, your gift to this charity is no less appreciated and no less a gift to charity.

Whoever you are, whatever your means, do think of us and what we are trying to achieve by making whatever donation you can manage towards: “the promotion of community participation in healthy recreation, in particular by the provision of facilities for the playing of cricket and other amateur sports deemed charitable under English law.”

Dear Players, Former Players, Neighbours, Friends & Supporters of Amateur Community Sport

Failand & Portbury Cricket Club:  Urgent appeal for £50,000 towards a good cause

Last year was marked a major development for our village cricket club - the acquisition of surrounding land which has enabled us to invest in making the ground fit for good standard club cricket, without losing any of its rural charm and character. What other grounds incorporate an historic oak tree, with other centuries-old oaks round the boundary?

The land, which was part of The Michallat Estate became available at very short notice, and it had to be bought  by “Perimeter Enterprises”,  set up and funded for just that purpose by a small group of Club members with short-term loans  - necessary because the Club simply did not have the funds required.

The Management Committee (as elected by Club members at AGM) have now authorised the Club to purchase the land.  The cost involved is just under £50,000.  We have secured a low-interest 5 year loan of £10,000 from The Somerset Playing Fields Association, and have definite promises of donations or long term loans for a further £15,000 from a small number of Club members.

Our intention is to exchange contracts on the land by the end of April 2012, so we need as much as possible of the remaining £25,000 in place as soon as possible.

To that end, we are looking for offers of loans or donations to help us towards that target.

As a registered charity, we can take advantage of Gift Aid, which enables us to gross up donations from taxpayers by another 25% (and higher rate taxpayers can themselves get tax relief at 20% or 30% in addition).

If you want to help, and can afford to, we really need your help.  Please let me know as soon as possible.  Just give me a ring on 01761 463 881 or reply by email to I will of course treat our conversation in total confidence!

This project is for the long term, so pledges of future support would also be most welcome. And looking (I hope) a really long way ahead, for those who are thinking of making (or updating) their will, do please remember Failand & Portbury Cricket Club – the 2011 Budget introduced some extra incentives for those wishing to make donations in this way.

The new land has made an enormous difference to the current facilities and future potential of the club. Raising the money to buy the land will put us in a really secure and advantageous position going forward - few other clubs own their ground freehold, let alone one of our quality. We believe the development also sustains our cricket club’s place in the community, and helps us maintain the unique quality of the local environment for the benefit not just of a few members but for all.

It’s a lovely setting, a friendly club, and visitors, well-wishers & neighbours will always be welcome.

If you are in a position to help us now, please do.  We would be more than grateful.

Best wishes and I hope you can help us.
