Hunsur drought: one year on

Date Posted: 08 Feb 2016

A year after we sent a grant of £6,000 to Hunsur settlement to help them recover their crops after a huge drought in 2014, we are happy to report the new crops are thriving and so are the farmers!

Hunsur is a Tibetan settlement in Karnataka state, home to nearly 4,000 Tibetan refugees. They depend heavily on farming for food and income.

The grant enabled the settlement's co-operative to provide the farmers with seeds, fertiliser and, in some cases, tools to replant entire crops of maize which had been damaged by the drought. A total of 171 farmers and families received portions of the grant, managing to replant 622 acres in total.

The new crop is now well established and the planting and harvesting cycle is back on track; a great result all round and only possible because of your donations!
