The proposed development will transform the Grove Centre as an integrated multi-purpose facility, creating a vibrant hub for community activities.  This will provide a welcoming, attractive, accessible, modern, flexible place for people in Sydenham and Forest Hill and will be achieved by developing the space between our buildings, and substantially refurbishing the interior of the Grove Centre House.

THE FUTURE VISION AND BENEFITS TO THE LOCAL COMMUNITY

Improve access and increase flexibility

The building development will provide a new and inviting central entrance with the construction of a light and airy atrium and will create a site that is accessible to all users, whilst offering additional flexible spaces to meet growing local needs.

Improved facilities and increased capacity

The development will create brighter, accessible spaces, with improved facilities.  The increase in the spaces available, with a broader range of associated facilities, will enable the Grove Centre to support additional groups and community activities.

Notable new resources not currently available within the Grove Centre will include:

  • New medium-sized spaces that will accommodate the needs of larger community groups or events that are too big for the current smaller rooms but which do not require the larger halls and associated costs.  This would address the needs of residents and community groups, Police community liaison, residents and housing associations, as well as existing user groups.
  • Improved opportunities for a conference or training venue to be provided in one of the main halls, with a variety of smaller spaces available for associated discussion groups and seminars.
  • Enhanced kitchen facilities for social events and children’s parties.
  • Modernised services including free managed wifi, as frequently requested by groups.

Sustainability and independence

The increased capacity will facilitate the Grove Centre in moving towards becoming self-sustaining, reducing the dependency on funding from the local authority. Revenue from enlarged and more attractive facilities will also enable the Grove Centre to continue to provide subsidised rental to voluntary and not-for-profit groups.

Environmental improvement

The local environment will be enhanced by the redesigned integrated building and the open landscaping of the exterior frontage of the building - making the site more attractive to both its neighbours and users.

Expanding opportunities for community outreach and support

Many local community groups and facilities are experiencing difficulties and some are closing due to a loss of affordable facilities, sometimes a result of a reduction in funding; therefore, attractive and affordable community space is much needed in the local area.  The development would allow the Centre to provide a home or occasional venue for additional groups.  This can encourage improvements in health and well-being, community building and engagement, as well as continuing to provide and develop existing Grove Centre projects (such as the Lunch Service) which reduce isolation and promote community cohesion.

Community Engagement

As well as the improvements to the physical environment and increased capacity, the Grove Centre will build upon its established position and experience to date with a programme of community engagement.  This will aim to further involve current users of the centre and the wider community in the continuing development of the Grove Centre and how it can best meet the needs of local people and have a positive impact on their health and well-being and sense of community.  This key element of the development will run in parallel to and complement the building programme.

A place to meet and belong

We want to create a resource at the heart of our community that is contemporary, welcoming, and buzzing, without feeling crowded.  We want to provide space that will be attractive to those in the private, public and voluntary sector who would wish to hire it, as well as those in the local community who want to hire facilities for private functions and celebrations.  We will create more space where people can meet and belong.
