Sailing around the UK in a Wayfarer dinghy

May 31 2014

Jul 31 2014

  • Day 1

    Day 1

Starting Saturday May 31st, Phil Kirk and Jeremy Warren intend to sail Wayfarer dinghy Hafren around the UK in record time.  The current best is 78 days and they target 60 days.   Their intention is to demonstrate good seamanship and self-sufficiency at sea, and to show that a dinghy can undertake extended coastal passages safely.  They wish to foster good will between sailing clubs and leave a trail of burgees from Thornbury Sailing Club in clubhouses around Britain.  This trip will be approximately ten hops of 200 miles (the direct distance is 1500 miles).   Each hop is about three days and two nights.  It is rare to sail dinghies in the dark; there is genuine risk here.  They値l go clockwise from Weymouth, up the Irish Sea, west of the Isle of Mann, drop into Northern Ireland then off up the west coast of Scotland.  This will take in the formidable headlands of Cape Wrath and Duncansby Head, the wild east coast, sandbanks of the Thames Estuary, and the familiar headlands of the south coast.

They値l be raising money for RNLI and for the PAPPA FUND, which does much to support healthcare and education in dirt-poor southern India.
