Meet the Fundraiser: Joseph Howes, Depaul UK

Joseph Howes of Depaul UK talks to The Fundraiser about magic powers, positive thinking and his ‘Australian’ accent.

Why and how did you get into fundraising?

I took part in a World Youth Millennium Awards scheme in England and Ghana when I was 21, and it was part funded by The Prince’s Trust. When I returned I had an opportunity to join the fundraising team at the trust, and the experience of working there was such a good one I wanted to stay in the fundraising world and use my skills to help others.

What do you love most about being a fundraiser?

Without a doubt, the diversity of life as a fundraiser. That, and knowing that I’ve actually helped people at the end of my day. That’s always been really important to me.

Give us an unusual fact that people might not know about you?

Everyone thinks I’m Australian when they meet me (I’ve already had it a few times at Depaul!) – I’m not, I’ve never even been to Australia. Must be the Kent accent!

What would be your superpower?

Magically getting my kids to sleep through the night.

If you weren't in fundraising, what would you like to do instead?

I’d probably want to be a paragliding instructor in New Zealand or something – it’s not off the list yet!

What's the best piece of advice you've ever been given?

Always stay on top of your numbers! Nobody respects a fundraiser that doesn’t know their numbers inside out.

What's your best piece of advice for other fundraisers?

I think there is a lot to be said for positive thinking. Whether it’s an event, big presentation or financial target you’re aiming for, always believe you can achieve the outcome - and outwardly express this. If you don’t, you’ll face an uphill struggle and you probably won’t get there. I’ve worked with a lot of ‘can do’ people, and they’re always the ones that achieve their goals.

What three things would you take with you to a desert island?

My family, my Spotify playlists and something to play them on!

What makes you happy?

Getting out and about. That’s why being a fundraiser is great – there are always plenty of reasons to get out there; whether it’s visiting the work we are raising money for, putting on events, or meeting our donors.
