Support Dogs are a Sheffield based national charity dedicated to transforming the lives of people with epilepsy, physical disabilities and children with autism.
Our specially trained assistance dogs enhance quality of life and bring independance by; providing help with everyday tasks for people with physical disabilities, giving advanced warning of seizures for people with epilepsy and aiding families of children with autism.
We currently offer 3 training programmes:
Disability Assistance Dogs are taught task work tailored to their owner’s needs. We use the special bond that exists between pet and owner to channel the dog’s willingness to help into assistance work. Our aim is to improve access for people who depend upon dogs for mobility and independence most particularly in supermarkets, food shops and other public places as well as providing practical assistance for everyday life.
Seizure Alert Dogs are trained to respond and alert their owners to an imminent epileptic seizure. The security and independence people have gained through having a Seizure Alert Dog is tremendous. Our dogs can detect and give up to a 40 minute warning to an oncoming seizure, which enables the client to get to a safe and private place which reduces the risk of serious injury or in worst case scenarios life threatening injur.
Autism Assistance Dogs are trained to meet the needs of both child and parents for a degree of predictability in social settings helping to bring independence not just for the children but for the whole family. Although each and every child with Autism is unique, many exhibit behaviours that lead to social isolation both within the family and with other people, mobility issues and a basic lack of awareness of danger in everyday situations.
We receive no government funding and rely on donations to continue our work.
