Over the Easter weekend (13-16 April), the Royal Borough of Greenwich will host the start of the Rendez-Vous 2017 Tall Ships Regatta. The regatta, organised by Sail Training International, will sail from Greenwich to Quebec in Canada, to mark the 150th anniversary of the Canadian Confederation. The fleet of over 30 large Class A and B Tall Ships will gather for four days in Greenwich and Woolwich before setting sail for Canada via Sines in Portugal, Bermuda and Boston.

Greenwich and Woolwich festival sites

Following the success of the Tall Ships Regatta 2014, which attracted 1.1million visitors, the Royal Borough of Greenwich is proud to welcome back a fleet of Tall Ships to the River Thames.

The ships will be anchored in the Thames alongside two Tall Ships festival villages. These will be located at the Maritime Greenwich UNESCO World Heritage Site in Greenwich town centre – where Seafarers UK and Sea Cadets (the festival’s two charity partners) will have a joint stand, so please come along and say hello! – and the Royal Arsenal Riverside in Woolwich.

Come down to enjoy maritime entertainment, live music and fireworks from Thursday 13 April to Sunday 16 April, before a huge Parade of Sail starting at 5pm from Deptford Creek on Sunday 16 April. During the Parade of Sail, the whole Tall Ships fleet will sail together down the Thames to the sea, before crossing the Atlantic and arriving in Quebec on 18 July 2017.

Sign up as ship crew

You can take part in the Rendez-Vous Tall Ships Regatta by signing up to be a crew member onboard a Tall Ship. No previous experience is required as you will be sailing as part of an experienced crew, learning as you go. You could choose to sail the whole three month journey, or just part of it.

Greenwich will be proud to welcome sail trainee crew to take part in the first leg of the Regatta – from Royal Greenwich to Sines in Portugal. This first leg takes two weeks and costs up to £1,800 depending on the ship you choose. Find out more about how to book your place.

Help support local young people as trainee crew

Seafarers UK is also seeking funding support to help local young people from the Royal Borough of Greenwich who are keen to take part but are financially challenged. Contact us with the details provided below if you would like more information on how to go about providing such financial sponsorship and assistance.
