Registered Charity Number: 1028947
Rainforest Concern was founded in 1993 to protect threatened natural habitats, the biodiversity they contain and the indigenous people who still depend on them for their survival.
The organisation has 18 conservation projects with its partner organisations in 9 countries: Ecuador, Peru, Chile, Colombia, Brazil, Costa Rica, India, Sri Lanka and Romania. The Charity has over 10,000 members and is a member of IUCN.
Fundamental to Rainforest Concern’s philosophy is the formation of strong partnerships with conservation NGOs in the countries in which we operate. We firmly believe sound local knowledge and regular communication is vital to success in the field.
The four main categories of our work are:
1. Direct Conservation
This includes protection and management of forested land; reserve creation; purchase of land; creation of forest ‘corridors’ that connect existing protected areas; assisting indigenous communities to register their ancestral forests; reforestations of cleared areas of forest with native tree species.
2. Programmes of alternative income generation, health and education
3. Biodiversity Research is undertaken at several of the projects
4. Volunteer Programmes involving foreign and national volunteers in Chile, Costa Rica and Ecuador.
