We are looking for volunteers who want to:

Motivate and encourage people that are undergoing a cancer diagnosis to establish a healthy active lifestyle habit to aid their recovery. This will include making contact with a partner, attending initial assessment and taking part in exercise with your Get Active partner.

Being diagnosed with cancer can be extremely stressful. It not only affects the body but also the emotions.

The HCCN Get Active programme is designed to provide support to help people to return to a healthy lifestyle and create a self-supporting community.

People often signal a desire to join the programme but do not actually attend the initial briefing session. Sometimes this is because of a loss of confidence and/or misunderstanding of what could be involved in developing a healthy lifestyle.

We are looking for people living with a cancer diagnosis, that have an established healthy lifestyle specifically around exercise and want to share the benefits with others.

We want to make it easier for people to engage with Get Active and to develop their understanding of the many things they could do to enjoy a healthy life style.

Skills you need:

To be able to volunteer from home and support your partner who lives in the Huntingdon area

To have experienced a cancer diagnosis yourself

To have a well-developed active lifestyle habit

A desire to help others develop a good exercise habit

Be able to encourage people’s achievements

The ability to listen and understand others’ issues

To be persistent and supportive

Time commitment:

Between 30 minutes to 2 hours maximum per week for 24 weeks.

What’s in it for you:

You will be doing a great service to people trying to return to exercise.

From giving your time you will experience the satisfaction of knowing that your support has encouraged others to stay as healthy as they can. You will have enabled HCCN to allow access to more people to the Get Active process.

You will have made new friends.

Be encouraged and motivated to keep your own exercise habit (accountability never hurts).

Have a peer group of likeminded people that are also survivors and have a good exercise habit. Learn more about the benefits of exercise and rehabilitation.

You will have also had the opportunity to help someone else become a volunteer Buddy, perhaps your Get Active partner will in their own time become a Buddy for others.

For more full and detailed information, do get in touch to find out more.
