The Big Give Christmas Challenge 2018
We wish to give an enormous Thank You to The Coles-Medlock Foundation and our amazing supporters for pledging a total match-funding pot of £3,000 for @BigGive's #ChristmasChallenge18.
Despite significant improvements in education since the civil war, 2015 data shows that Sierra Leone's illiteracy rates remain stubbornly high at 52% putting the country in the bottom twenty in terms of literacy rates within the world (https://Knoema.com). Literacy among women is also much lower than for men, at only 37% compared to 57% for men (according to unicef).
Females living in rural communities typically have the toughest time attaining a basic education as lack of facilities, coupled with social and cultural beliefs around women's roles needing to to focus on domestic chores and raising families means women are often discouraged from education. Teenage pregnancy, gender-based violence and early marriage also exacerbate the levels of inequality in education.
The country is also still recovering from the Ebola crisis that killed around 4000 people in 2014-2016 in Sierra Leone (www.cdc.gov). During the outbreak schools were closed for eight months, resulting in a year of lost learning for an estimated 1.7 million children and young people.
We need help to continue the delivery of 15 Community-based Learning Circles in Bombali and Koinadugu, two of the poorest rural districts of Sierra Leone. These learning circles provide basic education for up to 600 local women and teenage girls who would otherwise miss out.
The Impact of Learning Circles
The women who attend the programme report considerable benefits to their lives - increased confidence and self-esteem; better hygiene, nutrition and communication in the home. They are also able to count money and calculate when a market transaction will make a profit. Some have been inspired to learn more and take on new responsibilities in the community.
How you can help
