Funds raised by The Big Give Christmas Challenge
Our first attempt in the The Big Give Christmas Challenge, and lots of hard work raising our social media profile, was rewarded by raising £6,737.50 towards 15 Women's Learning Circles in Sierra Leone run by our partner organisations: Education for Women and Grassroot Education and Development for Women. Our target for the campaign had to be realistic and based on the amount we felt we could raise in pledges and our efforts to raise donations online from existing, or new, supporters. It was therefore only part of the money needed to fund the 15 circles for the year.
Support for the learning circles includes reading books, stationery, batteries for lamps (they often meet after work in the fields or ccoking for their family is finished for the day) and repairs to blackboards and benches. It also includes provision of a Facilitator for each circle and funds to enable our partners to monitor the circles, carry out training workshops, and to report back to us. In turn it enables us to report back to our funders.
Attending a learning circle helps those who have missed out on schooling to learn basic skills for life and to progress on to their chosen work. Good hygiene to prevent illness such as cholera, is one of the subjects taught. Two people from the Kabala area were able to complete a tailoring course through the literacy and numeracy skills they had learnt in one of the circles; others have gone on to become traditional birth attendants or to gain qualifications for teaching in a local school.
Apart from The Big Give Christmas Challenge we have raised funds from several private donors but are still about £2,000 short of the funds needed for the year so if you can help by making a one off or regular donation, it will help us to support all 16 circles for the full year. The cost of a place in a circle for one person is approximately £50 for a year.
