This year I am running the Virgin Money London Marathon for a charity very special to me, ACE - Aiding Conservation Through Education. A cornish based charity who work tirelessly to improve and develop rural schools in Uganda.
In 2005 I was lucky enough to go to Uganda with ACE and visit the local schools they work with. I was so impressed that every penny ACE raised went directly to those who needed it. ACE have re-built classrooms, trained teachers, built water tanks in schools where previously children would go all day without a drink, built new latrines and supplied children with school books, pencils and other stationery, which without they could not attend school. Uganda is a beautiful country stricken with immense poverty and there is still so much work to be done.
Charities like ACE are putting measures in place to solve the long term, not just the short term.
I would be so grateful if you could help me reach my fundraising target of £2350.
So far I've trained through a storm, snow, during the Britain's Got Talent tour, I've injured my knee and I have blisters larger than I knew possible....but all this is nothing in comparison to the challenges the children, teachers and families in rural Uganda face every day.
So please, support me to support them and make a real difference! Thank you!
From the website:
"Our main focus is communities bordering the National Parks in Uganda, where many people live a hand-to-mouth existence, yet conservation and sustainability are extremely important.
Primary education is free in Uganda but parents have to supply pencils, exercise books and uniforms. Many children have no parents because of the AIDS epidemic, so provision of everything for these children falls to relatives or elderly grandparents.
Classes often number more than 200, with one teacher and no teaching materials. Classrooms, and other buildings, can be delapidated with earth floors and holes in the roof.
There are over 5,000 pupils at the schools which ACE supports."
