The Big House Theatre Company works with young people who have been through the care system and are finding life difficult. They provide a platform for them to participate in the making of theatre and to have their voices heard.
Phoenix is their first full length production, the blistering new play by Andy Day focuses on the fractured lives of those leaving the care system.
Phoenix runs from 26 November – 14 December at Hackney Downs Studios. The production has been developed out of The Big House theatre company's innovative personal and social development project for care leavers aged 16 – 25 from their own words and experiences, bringing into sharp focus the lives of this too often forgotten and marginalised group. The cast are all care-leavers and members of this education and training programme.
The Big House theatre company was established in 2013 and is the only theatre company in the UK using the transformative qualities of the dramatic arts to mend the fractured lives of Britain's care leavers. They work intensively with young care leavers who are at a high risk of social exclusion, delivering a unique combination of drama workshops, individual and group therapy, mentoring, life and employment skills. Through their holistic approach they aid the transition from care to independent living, and provide a platform for them to participate in the making of theatre and have their voices heard.
