Day 52 of Torch Relay sees worldwide support from Down’s Syndrome community
Not long now till July 9th when Eaton Bray resident Penny Green will be carrying the Olympic Torch on it’s final stage through Dunstable with the support of hundreds of friends from the worldwide Down’s Syndrome community, who are excited by her chance to use this opportunity to promote awareness.
T-shirts have been arriving at destinations all over the world and photos are popping up on Facebook of people proudly wearing them. A couple have even been worn to recent stages of the Torch Relay itself and there are many anecdotes about where friends will be wearing them on Monday, including one being worn in a hospital underneath a scrub top!
Penny Green, Director of Down’s Heart Groupoday attended a Press Conference in Luton and got to hold a Torch for the first time.
“It’s so exciting and such an honour to be able to represent so many people from around the world” she said. “I am blown away by the way people have supported me all the way through and it’s hard to keep up with all the comments on my Facebook page, especially as the day gets nearer. I know quite a few people who are planning to watch Torchcam around the world, even though it’s a very strange hour for some of them. Others closer to home are juggling work and school starts where possible to be able to see it live. I just hope that I can do them all proud and justify the faith they have put in me. There’s lots of talk about it being torchbearers ‘day to shine’, I just want to be able to shine for all the people with Down’s Syndrome around the world who shine on their families lives every day and to help promote acceptance and inclusion for people with Down’s Syndrome everywhere.”
