Leaving a legacy to Chethamís Library

Leaving a legacy to Chethamís Library will make a significant and long-lasting difference to the oldest public library in the English-speaking world.

Chetham's Library was founded in 1653 and is the oldest public library in the English-speaking world. It is an independent charity and remains open to readers and visitors free of charge.

The entire collection at Chetham's Library has been designated as one of national and international importance, an accolade of which we are extremely proud.

A legacy to Chethamís, large or small, could make a world of difference. We receive legacy gifts of all sizes for a wide range of purposes, and we would be delighted to hear from you and discuss support for the area that would mean most for you.

For those who wish to support Chethamís and our work more generally, we ask you to consider a gift for general purposes. This enables us to apply the legacy wherever the need is greatest, and provides us with the flexibility to direct your gift to where it will make the most impact at the time.

Make a Pledge

Gifts left in wills are really important to Chetham's Library. However even if you haven't made a will, making a pledge to do so in the future would really help us to find out about your future intentions.

Pledges are not legally binding so by filling out this form you are not committing yourself! You are simply allowing Chetham's Library to confidently estimate future support for their cause.

Leave a Legacy

If you have already made a will but you want to leave a legacy to a charity you can make an addition or change it without re-writing your current will. This addition is called a codicil.

To leave a legacy to Chetham's Library please download the codicil form below and take it along to your solicitor.

Please note however that this form is not legally binding on its own and has to be part of your main will. We advise you to seek the advice of a solicitor.

If you have any questions about leaving a legacy to us, please contact Chetham's Library directly Ė they will be happy to discuss this with you.
