AFRUCA’s Work and Research Project into the Prevalence of FGM in Greater Manchester

Date Posted: 10 Jun 2014

AFRUCA has received funding from the ROSA Fund to conduct a small research project exploring the prevalence of Female Genital Mutilation among African communities in Greater Manchester. This very important piece of work will take place over a 3month period and started in June 2014. It will look at:

  • Mapping of the prevalence of FGM in Greater Manchester.

  • Identifying the demographic settlement of Africans in Greater Manchester.

  • Undertaking desk research to identify what work has been done to date to impact communities which undertake this practice

  • Working with previous research and census results

  • Collecting data from the desktop research and community engagement i.e. focus groups, questionnaires and interviews to be written into a well referenced report

Funding will also enable us to conduct awareness raising among targeted communities in the form of workshops/training.

In addition to the research project and work with communities, AFRUCA offers specialist training across the North West on Female Genital Mutilation. We offer AFRUCA organised training events as well as bespoke training packages to help meet specific needs. Please contact our Centre if you are interested in working with us on this.

Ongoing work on Female Genital Mutilation at AFRUCA Centre:

  • AFRUCA’s training Brochure has been finalised for 2014/15 which offers a full day training on FGM to practitioners

  • AFRUCA have been approached by schools to share experiences of working with communities who practice FGM

  • Information is being offered to communities via consultative events held in community spaces or at AFRUCA’s premises

  • AFRUCA’s “What is FGM?” booklet will be updated according to conclusion of the research project and report

There will be an event to launch the research report towards the end of the year. Key individuals will be invited to speak at the launch. These will include representatives from Children services, Manchester FGM forum, Health services, community leaders and the police.
