As an initiative of people from the local community Wellgate came to life in 1982, turning a piece of wasteland into a well used community resource. This working farm is open free of charge 365 days a year thanks to the commitment of many volunteers, and visitors can enjoy seeing, hearing and touching cows, pigs, goats, sheep, ponies, chickens, ducks, rabbits, guinea pigs and more. The conservation pond and area is home to a variety of plant and animal life and the new apiary allows visitors to safely see the busy bees and learn all about honey making!

Wellgate Community Farm exists as a focus for community, creating an opportunity for people to grow, make a positive contribution and promote social cohesion. Committed to providing an inclusive place for individuals and groups to develop emotionally, socially, physically and spiritually within a working farm environment, it aims to:

  • Create a safe welcoming environment that is freely accessible.
  • Provide an educational experience which connects people with food and the land, and promotes compassionate farming and environmental sustainability.
  • Engage the community, including those who marginalised, in meaningful activity.
  • Create a sense of community and belonging where people can develop and be valued

The Farm is proud of its ability to bring people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds together through education, training, therapy and recreational opportunities.

Programmes include:

- Education worker and programme that offers organised visits to the farm, mobile visits to schools, school talks including harvest assemblies and 'Hatch Packs',(incubator hire and talk)

- Hands On Programme offering accredited training placements to young people 13-19. Placements include those at risk of not being in Education, Employment or Training (NEET), low achievers, those struggling in mainstream education including young people who lack self confidence and self esteem.
