Be Part Of Something Amazing
We all want to make sure our loved ones are taken care of when we're no longer around. Imagine being able to do that and also take care of millions of people around the world. You can be part of something special and make a gesture that will live on for generations by leaving a gift in your will to The Christie.
The Christie was established through public donations over 100 years ago and we've been here ever since - researching, pioneering and caring for people with cancer in the North West.
We consider ourselves a family, from the volunteer who greets people at the door, to the wonderful nursing staff and the patients and families they care for, everyone feels part of something special.
With a gift in your will, you can continue to help us long into the future, giving thousands of people with cancer the chance to spend more precious moments with their loved ones.
You're always needed
Much of the progress we make now and in the future is only possible thanks to the money that has been left to us in the past - gifts large and small left in their wills by our kind hearted, generous and loyal supporters.
There are, of course, lots of ways people can support The Christie. Many give single donations, some give their time and volunteer, while others take part in fundraising activities and events. All the support we receive is hugely appreciated and vital to our work. However, gifts in wills are our biggest source of funds, accounting for nearly half of our charitable income.
If this income falls, it will affect our ability to help the thousands of cancer patients and families who rely on us each year. A staggering 4 out of 10 people in the UK get cancer at some point in their lives, and with that number on the rise, the kindness of people like you has never been so important.
Just imagine how many more people could be helped with your gift.
A gift in your will doesn't have to be large to make a difference. Just a small proportion of what's left after your friends and family have been provided for can play a big part in the future of your Christie.
If you decide to leave us a gift - however you choose to do so, and with whatever you can - your support will be hugely appreciated by everyone touched by The Christie.
There are two ways in which you can choose to remember The Christie in your will. The first of these is called a 'residuary gift'. With a gift of this nature you can leave a proportion of what's left - however large or small.
This type of gift is most useful to a charity, as its value is not likely to be affected by inflation, nor will it affect what your loved ones receive.
Alternatively, you may prefer to leave us a fixed amount of money. This is known as a 'pecuniary gift'. It is worth noting that the effects of inflation could make the true value of this gift less than you intended, unless you review your will regularly, which we always recommend you do.
Always learning, always leading
The Christie has an international reputation for excellence.
Over the past 100 years we have played a crucial role in the advancement of cancer research and care. From the start, we have led the way with world firsts:
- In the 1950s we treated the first patient in the UK using a linear accelerator - a historic moment in cancer care.
- In 1970, we ran the world's first trial of Tamoxifen - a groundbreaking drug for breast cancer which now saves thousands of lives every year
- In 1996, our scientists were responsible for developing photo-dynamic therapy to treat skin cancer - greatly improving survivial rates
- In 2002, we were first to implement the clinical use of image-guided radiotherapy on a radiotherapy machine - increasing the treatment's effectiveness and limiting damage to healthy cells
- In 2011, we opened the world's largest early stage clinical trials unit and the UK's largest chemotherapy unit, offering cutting-edge treatments and world-class care to thousands of cancer patients across the North West
Gifts and wills have played a major part in our achievements and will continue to help us pioneer long into the future.
