The Y Support Project
Practical and one to one support for homeless adults in Leicester
The Y Support Project is our drop in centre for homeless adults of any age, based in Leicester City Centre. We see over 100 people a day with all kinds of pressing needs and we seek to ensure a safe and welcoming environment for all. The centre offers food, laundry, showers, welfare advice, access to health professionals and educational activities.
The Y Support Project receives basic funding but needs to attract additional donations in order to offer winter services including hot breakfasts and extended hours. Funding also enhances the support we can offer to help people develop the skills and confidence they need to move on with their life.
"The Y Support Project was there for me at the lowest point of my life" - Former service user, now in employment
ďI had an accident at work two years ago, I needed surgery and physiotherapy and had been unable to work. I struggle with reading and writing and canít use a computer. All the forms were getting too much for me, I was depressed and suffering from panic attacks. I didnít know where to turn and thought I was going to lose my home.
Iíd been too proud to ask for help, but decided to take all my stuff to The Y Support Project. I got breakfast and food parcels and talked to the staff. They helped me to contact the DWP, appeal the ATOS assessment, make a JSA claim and sort out my Housing Benefits. I was going to be ok to stay at the flat, I could pay my bills and buy food.
All I wanted was to be able to keep my flat and get back to work. Leicestershire Cares helped me with the computer and got me on a computer course. I passed the exam and I got a work placement straight away and have since got myself a job. I couldnít have asked for better help and donít know how Iíd have sorted things out on my own.Ē Former service user
