Community Workshops

Date Posted: 23 Nov 2012

In addition to these core activities, NYOS also has a commitment to working with communities across Scotland, many of which are disadvantaged or remote and therefore have fewer opportunities to access music making.  Working closely with teachers, tutors and local music groups we provide tailored workshops for children and young people, regardless of musical background and experience, to present a range of ways to participate in professionally delivered musical education activities.

We have just completed a successful programme of workshops, residencies and performances in Shetland, The Orkney Isles and The Western Isles and are about to return to The Scottish Borders to build upon previous workshops in this area, providing jazz based workshops, working closely with communities, schools and local jazz groups to develop further support within this area for development of young musicians

In this short film you will see composer, Eve Harrison working with musicians from camerata Scotland to lead workshops with pupils from Sgoil Lionacleit. You can listen to them rehearse and perform with one another under the guidance of conductor Garry Walker and also hear the Camerata musicians and local students describe the experience in their own words.

NYOS requires funding support to be able to continue to provide workshops in communities across Scotland.  Last year over 300 young people who would not otherwise have had access to such training, benefitted from the NYOS community education programme. Please help us continue this work with children in their own communities to develop their musical education by donating to the work of NYOS in Scotland.
