The Samaritans is a nationwide charity which exists to provide confidential non-judgmental, emotional support to despairing - whatever the nature of their crisis (and regardless of age, race, colour, creed or gender). Stress depression and, above all, suicide, impact on millions of lives every year; 26% of the population personally know someone who has died by suicide and there has been a 50% increase in suicide attempts since 1990. Yet these subjects are surrounded by shame, confusion and fear, compounding the problems immensely. The Samaritans also seeks to provide the general public with a better understanding and awareness of the issues surrounding suicide and depression, and of the value of expressing feelings that may lead to suicide. Currently The Samaritans receive over 4 million calls. We now have nearly 19,600 volunteers giving, on average, one and a half working days a month to provide our service 24 hours a day, every day. It currently costs more than £8.7 million a year to run The Samaritans' network of Branches - telephone costs alone exceed £1 million. The Samaritans relies on voluntary donations for more than 90% of our income to continue providing this vital service; under 5% of our income is from Government.
