Social care is essential for the many thousands of families who have a life threatened or terminally ill child and who need more support than their own resources and networks can provide. This is a complex task, as families embark on intense relationships with professionals during some of the most vulnerable times of their family life. ‘Working ourselves into the Shadows’ is the challenge we set ourselves as professionals when providing support, so that families can navigate their way through these situations, to a point where they no longer need us.

This conference focuses on the challenges faced by families and professionals, and ideas of how to overcome them. It will also explore the differences and similarities between these families. Through a range of workshops and debates, family members will work alongside professionals to bring their voice and authenticity to the day.

Workshops include:

  • Ensuring a service is accessible to all and looking at how we work in a culturally sensitive way
  • Resilience - what does it mean for you and families?
  • Sibling support - led by the young people receiving this service
  • Focus on parents volunteering to support other parents
  • Talking to families about bereavement services
  • Working with separated families.

This conference is suitable for health and social care practitioners working in a wide variety of settings.
