Open Seminars for Volunteers & Supporters
Dec 01 2014
We aim to hold 3 or 4 Open Seminars a year. They are designed to provide an insight into our work in international development. Here is a note on our last seminar, held on 1st December 2014.
title: Grassroots Livelihoods Programmes: practical support for rural women in Sierra Leone
place: City Discovery Centre, Bradwell Abbey, Milton Keynes MK13 9AP
time: 18.00 - 20.00 [nibbles provided]
We launched our Livelihoods Programme earlier in the year to improve food security for the 15 learning circles that we support in Bombali & Koinadugu, and this has enabled ~400 women to grow groundnuts and rice, some for the first time. A few have also planted maize, peppers and egg plants.
Designing and managing grassroots projects like this, with local partners and involving agricultural professionals, is never straightforward because of logistical, economic and cultural constraints and the potential for misunderstanding. At this seminar we provided an insight into the practicalities of such grassroots work and the challenges that we have faced — not least the outbreak of Ebola.
Powerful Information has a hands-on approach to international development and seeks to empower communities in low-income countries with the information, understanding and means to tackle poverty and discrimination and promote good health and sustainable livelihoods. We currently have four grassroots initiatives in Sierra Leone and volunteers working on two of them. So what are the challenges and pitfalls, and how do we get around them? Come along and find out.
