Open Channels works with dispossessed communities to define and defend their lands, resources and rights.
We have been working with San communities in southern Africa since 1997. Working with film maker and anthropologist Hugh Brody we have helped record their story, their place in the land, their languages and their specialised knowledge. We are now working with the San to ensure that lessons learned and materials generated in the course of the ‡Khomani San land claim of 1999 become widely available. Tracks Across Sand, a DVD which tells how the San began the slow rebuilding of their pride and recovered their lands, is to be made widely available for use by the peoples of southern Africa as well as by communities at risk of losing their lands in many parts of the world. An online archive will bring the story to a global audience.
