Kibera Solar Lamp Project

Date Posted: 12 Apr 2013

The KIN/Riziki Solar Lamp Project supplies solar lamps on hire purchase to Kibera residents who pay for the lamps over 26 weeks. KIN are co funders with a Kenyan NGO, KCDF who manage Comic Relief funds for Kibera projects, and this partnership is excellent news. KIN’s share of the funding is around £2500 and £22 will buy 1 lamp. The project entered its seventh month of implementation in December 2012 and the lamps are proving hugely popular. 367 lamps have been distributed to-date. We hope to continue the project through 2013.

Feedback from Kibera is very positive. Tsisica, a caregiver, says the Solar Lamp has been life changing. She now does not have to spend money on medication for chest congestion caused by dirty kerosene lighting. The cost is less than kerosene and so she can spend more on food and water. Her children can study for longer and their shack is a much safer environment. She and her children are thrilled. Our co funder partner, KCDF has published an article on the project at: www.kcdf.or.ke under Resource Center/News/Mwangaza Poa Project.
